Course Overview

The CALM Integrative Positive Behaviour Support (IPBS) course is distinct from more traditional PBS courses in a number of significant ways.

Firstly, it is truly integrative – synthesising core concepts from attachment, trauma and behavioural theory to build an approach that works with the whole person and not only their behaviour.

Secondly, it forms part of our system-wide, whole organisation approach in which those who have completed the IPBS program provide clinical leadership and supervision to direct care staff who have undertaken Calm Core Theory.

What we know is that the train and hope model of sending staff on a training programme and hoping for better outcomes does not work. Decades of experience and research has shown us that in order to embed any new approach we need an enabling infrastructure that supports it.

The Integrative Positive Behaviour Support (IPBS) course was created to meet that need for our community of service providers.

You’ve told us you need more than just theory; you need more than just awareness of the research; you need staff sufficiently skilled to provide local clinical and practice leadership. You need staff who can oversee integrative assessments, develop integrative support plans, train staff in their implementation and monitor their application.

What Can You Expect?

Days 1-3 are consecutive face-to-face learning with day 4 (4 weeks later) facilitated online. Compulsory work is set between day 3 and 4 during which participants will continue online with the practical aspects of the course as applied to their own service. Participants will then have the opportunity to implement the core competencies of the programme and consolidate their learning in an online day 4.

Who is This Course For?

The CALM IPBS course is an intensive programme for practitioners with some experience of developing person-centred behaviour supports and who have previously undertaken CALM Core Theory. It is for those looking to extend their knowledge, expertise and competencies in the implementation of attachment-based and trauma-informed positive behaviour support. This 4-day program is designed to prepare individuals for the implementation of attachment-based and trauma-informed behaviour support and/or restrictive intervention reduction within a specific service e.g. a residential unit, adult support service or school.
