Course Overview

Self-harm and suicide are distinct and separate acts with differing motivational factors. Self-harm is usually a coping mechanism and is more about staying alive, while someone may choose suicide to end physical or emotional pain.

This course will provide participants with the opportunity to explore the causes of self- injurious and suicidal behaviour. There will be opportunities to discuss and explore the reasons why people may adopt such behaviours, the potential functions of the behaviour and its relationship to trauma.

Finally, and as importantly, the course will emphasise why the emotional dimensions of support for those working alongside children and adults who may self-harm or exhibit suicidal behaviours must be explicitly managed.
