BILD Act Certified and RRN Approved Training

Our Commitment to BILD-ACT certifies Practice

Are CALM’s physical intervention courses certified?

At CALM, all of our physical intervention training is certified by BILD ACT.

This means every course we deliver meets independently verified national standards for safe, ethical and rights-respecting practice.

Who are BILD ACT?

BILD ACT is the UK body licensed to independently certify training against the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards.

These standards set out what high-quality training should look like where physical intervention may be used, with a strong emphasis on prevention and de-escalation, human rights and proportionality, trauma-informed practice, and the reduction of restrictive interventions.

While BILD ACT certification is not currently a mandatory requirement across all organisations, it is widely recognised as the gold standard for best practice across health, education and social care sectors.

Is BILD ACT certification always required?

Not all training organisations are required to hold BILD ACT certification. Across the sector it has become increasingly common for providers to offer non-certified physical intervention training.

These shorter courses often prioritise speed, cost and minimal learning time. In some cases, restraint techniques are introduced quickly, with limited focus on understanding behaviour, distress or context. More comprehensive, accredited training is then offered separately, at an additional cost, creating a two-tier approach.

How does CALM work?

CALM works differently.

For almost three decades, CALM has worked to a single, consistent standard. We believe that physical intervention training must always be grounded in:

As a result, CALM has never offered diluted or non-certified versions of physical intervention training. Every CALM physical intervention course meets the same accredited standards from the outset.

Why does this matter?

This commitment underpins the integrity of CALM’s work and reflects who we are as a rights-respecting, ethical organisation.

We have made a conscious choice to hold ourselves to the highest standards, even where this requires more time, depth and investment.

By embedding accredited, trauma-informed and rights-respecting practice from the outset, we ensure that those who train with CALM develop not only technical competence, but the professional judgement, ethical awareness and relational skills required to support people safely, with dignity and respect.
